I watched The Fall (2006) last night by Persian director Tarsem in Blu-Ray 1080p. It was seriously one of the most beautifully shot movies I’ve ever seen. The shots in this movie should be in a video test to showcase high definition and resolution technology. One shot that stands out in my mind is a horseman riding against a red sand dune, but it’s shot at such a wide angle that the sky looks red. Also, a butterfly transitioning into a tropical island from another beautiful wide angle shot was one of my favorite. The story was sincere and brilliant, the acting also terrific, but half of its power is in its cinematography. It’s a fairytale kind of similar to Pan’s Labyrinth, not as phenomenal but much more entertaining, I thought. I like Tarsem because every shot, every scene and set he has could be its own artistic piece in itself. It’s like watching beautiful photography sets in live action, with a story.
